Do you start the year with a list of goals, resolutions and great intentions to do more, be healthier or be happier? Well, you're not alone! Over 80% of American Millennials and Gen Y’s make New Year’s resolutions. And, 45% of these resolutions are to do with health and 37% are to do with self-improvement.
A survey of Kiwis in 2020 showed similar trends, with the top three New Year’s resolutions being to eat a healthier diet, exercise more and save more money.
Supporting your body to recover from your NY Resolutions!
So, if doing more exercise is on your list for 2021, here are our top tips for making it easy, making it last and making it pain-free!
Invest in some good equipment!
And by equipment, we mean shoes, togs, hats etc. Having the right equipment to exercise with will help your body adjust to your new routine with fewer aches and pains.
Start slowly!
Going hard is NOT the way to do more exercise! It is if you want to hurt yourself and not get off the couch for the next few weeks - but that’s not what you’re wanting to do, is it?! Start slow, light and regular. Gradually build up over time and expect a few adjustments as your body gets used to your new routine. (And if you take it too far and need muscle relief, try Qoleum organic muscle rub!)
Get a buddy
Starting a new routine with a buddy is one of the best ways to get accountability and support when it comes to those days when you really can’t be bothered! Team up with a family member or friend, or join a group or club. Even signing up with an app can give you accountability and keep you on track - but won’t give you a giggle when you need one!
Get a coach!
Starting out with a totally new exercise routine or sport can be hard when you don’t know the tricks and tips to make things easier. Signing up with a coach or trainer for a few weeks or more may help you get used to your new routine and learn the techniques you need to keep safe and enjoy your exercise.
Consistency is key
Exercising more may be one of the top three New Year’s Resolutions, but it’s also one of the top New Year’s Resolutions fails. Gym memberships boom in January, but by May the classes are empty again! Consistency is key to keeping up with your new exercise routine and feeling the benefits all year. Things that help improve exercise consistency:
- Think about the best time of day to exercise - are you a morning or evening person?
- What exercise would you find easiest to do?
- Put in your diary or calendar your exercise times
- Use a buddy, coach or app to help keep you on track
- Set out your exercise gear where you can see it (so you don’t forget)
