These wood chews slowly break down into soft and small digestible pieces. However, it is good practice to always supervise your dog with any chew/treats and to take away any small pieces if you are concerned, as you would with any other chew toy.
Once the stick is small enough to swallow whole, replace it with a new one. The amount of time it takes to reach this point will depend on the strength of your dog’s chewing.

When do I replace the Coffee Wood Chew?
This depends on your dog's chewing abilities and frequency. If your dog has been chewing it for a few days/weeks then it should start to break down or wear out. Large sized pieces can be chewed on without any serious risk. However, do make sure to take away any swallow-size chunky bits, as you would do with any other treat or toy to be safe. They do soften upon chewing, which means they don't pose a choking hazard. In fact, they break down into digestible chips - so that they're safe and easy on your dog’s tummy!
Does it make a mess?
The majority of the feedback is zero - minimal mess. However depending on your dog (as every dog had individual chewing habits) there may be a few wood shavings left behind. But we can guarantee it will be much better than your dog bringing in tree branches from the backyard!
